"My advice to you is not to inquire why or whither, but just enjoy the ice cream while it's on your plate." - Thornton Wilder
As the temperature headed into the mid-90s today, the rascals and I made a beeline for Twistee Treat. She enjoyed the strawberry-vanilla swirl in a cup while he chose the cookies-and-cream shake. I stuck to a chocolate cone. It was an experience far more valuable than the five bucks I handed over.

Sunset on the Ohio River Guitar Dad and the peeps just returned from Louisville, Kentucky, where my wife has tons of family and where there's no lack of fun stuff to do. We travel there almost yearly, and this trip was a big one ... to celebrate the 100th birthday of my wife's grandmother. It was a splendid affair. The visit also gave us the opportunity to cram in a bunch of touristy things, namely to take a cruise on the Ohio River and drop in on the fabled Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, aka "the most exciting two minutes in sports." Especially notable (for me, at least) was the 45 minutes or so I spent at the Guitar Emporium on Bardstown Road, one of the coolest guitar shops I've ever seen. It was a great trip for all of us. Fifty years ago today, one of our most influential writers checked out, perhaps a bit prematurely but obviously in accordance with his own terms. Ernest Hemingway's great talent and persona still cast "a long shadow," says this USA Today piece, and lots of us couldn't agree more. He was a master of lean, lucid prose and soaring stories of courage. Here's a favorite Hemingway sentence about the power of great writing: "All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they had really happened and after you are finished reading one you will feel that all of that happened to you and afterwards it all belongs to you: the good and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse and sorrow, the people and the places and how the weather was." |
