Aside from playing on my junior high school basketball team, predominantly on the bench and for just a sliver of the season, or joining a handful of pick-up games over the years, I haven't exactly sought out opportunities to display my mediocre hoops skills. Now, with my son so wired for the sport, I find myself drawn to the game every weekend, not only to bond with my boy but to feel the adrenaline rush that comes with hitting the hardwood.
Today we returned to the YMCA for some court time ... some shooting and defending ... a little friendly competition. It's true I have a significant height advantage over the little guy, but the 46 years of wear and tear on my frame allows him to outperform me from just about every other angle. Plus, he's just plain good at the game.
From the strategy of a play, to the squeaking of our sneakers on the floor, to the sweat seeping through my shirt, I love every contour of the sport. It certainly makes me feel like a kid again. That is, until I wake up the next morning with sore knees and throbbing back pain!
"Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game." - Michael Jordan
